It’s beginning to look a lot like…

This past Sunday was the big Christmas party/knitter’s gift exchange at Jacquie’s house, and boy, it did NOT disappoint.  The gift exhange was done “bad santa” style, where everyone draws a number and picks gifts from under the tree….OR steals a gift from someone who had gone before them.  This always starts out tame and polite, with everyone picking unwrapped gifts…but soon turned nasty as some of the gifts turned out to be too good to pass up.  A gift could only be stolen 3 times before it was considered “safe,” so there was much hand-wringing and tears.  Poor Knit Goth got her gifts stolen AT LEAST 6 times, if not more.

One of the highest prizes of the evening was a skein of wollmeise, which is like SOCK KNITTERS PLATINUM in the knitting world.  I wouldn’t know, since I’ve never knit with it, and I am FAR above such petty drama as who is lucky enough to get the wollmeise - it’s occasionally updated stock site is quickly stripped bear by it’s rabid fans, who then jump on ravlery to either gloat or bitch about their successes and losses.  After two steals it ended up in Jane’s lap, but was eventually stolen by the blogless Melissa which was TOTALLY NOT FAIR AT ALL I WAS GOING TO STEAL IT FROM JANE OMG I WANTED THAT YARN SO BAD MELLISA YOU’D BETTER SLEEP WITH ONE EYE OPEN, WOMAN!

ahem

Like I said, I’m totally above such petty things.  So instead, I stole a gift from Steve, which just happened to be the third steal for this particular gift, so my prize was SAFE, and I got to bask in the glow of it’s loveliness.

A skein of STR in “Gingerbread Dude” colorway, a handknit scarf, and a knit pouch

This gift was brought by Jane, and I couldn’t be happier with it - the scarf perfectly matches my new coat, which is grey wool.  And the sock yarn goes nicely with some recently purchased yarn:

STR in “Gingerbread Dudette”

His and her socks!  Yay!

Because I was totally NOT dwelling on, and chewing on my own liver over the lost wollmeise, I decided to take advantage over a very generous one day sale at Knitch on sock yarn, and pick up this:

Numma Numma

Numma numma’s The Usual, in “Chinese Takeout”

This picture doesn’t even do it justice.  It is VIBRANT oranges and just glorious.  Why does this soothe my wollmeise-deprived soul?  Because clever Allen, who produces Numma Numma yarns out of her very own basement, was able to get the SAME YARN BASE as is used in wollmeise yarns.  And since it’s not being shipped from Germany, it’s MUCH more affordable.  ESPECIALLY if you get it 20% off like I did  ;)

Pics from the party:

What else has been going on…well, the gift I commissioned for my mother is done!  Made by the talented Brett, who’s also making another one for ME.  I picked the fabric because it was soft and pretty on the outside, but fun in the inside - my mom works at a library, so I liked the typeface all over the fabric.

The bag is SUPER sturdy and well made.  I love it!  Can’t wait for mine to be done!

Help ESC make her christmas card!

I want to do another picture card for christmas this year, but I have to do it NOW so I can get them made (thank you, Wolfe Camera!) and get them out by Friday or Saturday.  HELP ME PICK AN ADORABLE PICTURE!

card option 1 card option 2 card option 3

It was tough to get Sadie and the tree in the shot together, since the tree is up on a trunk this year (only spot for it), so either the doggy stocking got clipped or most of the tree did.  I plan on doing some GIMPy “enhancing” to make the pic suitably magical.  I was also thinking about adding a little “loldog” caption.  Not sure what, though.  So what do you think?  1, 2, or 3?  and what might a good caption be?

UPDATED!

I updated wordpress! Yeah, I know you care. So to entertain you, here’s an email conversation I had recently with Grace.

We were discussing updating wordpress to the new version.

Grace:  Friday night we’re going to the zoo to see the zoo-lights so I doubt I’ll get to work on it then.

ESC:  zoo-lights! in alabama! what, do they string lights over some possums? ;)

Grace: Yes. And some chickens.

ESC:  Take pictures.

Grace:  Planning on it.

Have a great weekend!  Deck the chickens!

why don’t you BLOOOOGGGGG more?

I’ve been BUSY, OK?

Busy doing what, you ask?

Busy turning 32, that’s what.  It’s harder than it looks!

Yes, it was mah birfday on Friday.  We celebrated rather low key that night - Kev made me dinner and bought me cake.  CAKE!

birthday cake!

strawberries and whipped cream!

I guess I don’t have to tell you that he got very lucky that night.

Saturday night we went out with friends Claudia, Sandy, and Bob.  We had dinner at the Melting Pot, which is a fondue restaurant, and stuffed ourselves silly with cheese and meat and chocolate.  And also alcohol…but that was mostly me and Sandy.  I started out with a regular sized blackberry margarita, which was SO GOOD I decided to have another.  Kev suggested I get the large, which comes in one of those giant novelty-sized martini glasses, so that he could “share.”  HA!  Share.  He had about 3 sips.  The rest was left to me and whooooa, I was drunk.

I don’t have pictures - the pic they took at the restaurant was already deleted when I went to the website to get it.  Damn!  So stupid.  Claudia took some pics, though, so hopefully she’ll put them up at some point (*cough*HINT!*cough*)

Sunday I knitted with friends and then came home and put up a slightly gimpy christmas tree.

slightly gimpy christmas tree

The base of the stand fell out of the box somewhere in our storage unit, so we used the base of our george foremen grill.  It tilts a bit…but you really hardly notice it!

Because I have the nicest friends EVER, I got some lovely presents for my birthday - all fiber related, of course!

Spunky Eclectcknit pouch

From Jane, who couldn’t come to dinner with us because of her husband’s stooopid work Christmas party.  She made the knit pouch herself, and the fiber is Spunky Eclectic

BMFA icelandic wool

BMFA Icelandic wool from Claudia.  This will be a scarf soon!

Sandy's handyed

Handyed superwash by and from Sandy.  She’s going to teach me how to spin for sock yarn!

And lastly, with some money from my parents, Kev, and Kev’s mom…

new camera!

new camera!!! chapstick added for size reference

Isn’t it cute and tiny?  My current camera (Sony DSC-H1) is still awesome, but it is big and clunky, and tough to just casually throw into my purse when I’m running out the door (hence, no melting pot pics from me), so I wanted something more portable.  Voila’!  The pics of my gifts were all taken using this camera, and I already love it.  I can already tell that it’s MUCH better at taking crisp photos without a flash and no tripod. It’s got a lot of very cool…and kind of creepy (”smile detection”) features as well.

An accessory pack that includes TWO tripods should be arriving tomorrow (the camera just came in today) so I will have a nice set of extras - carrying case, additional battery, etc.  Then WATCH OUT everyone!  You’ll never know when I’m going to whip this baby out and capture the moment!

Thanks everyone!  You made turning 32 almost comletely pain-free.  Now I’m going to go take my pills and hobble off to bed, after I yell at some kids to get off my lawn.

as promised

My brother is very chatty, and his stories are always a bit…um…disconcerting if you don’t know him very well.

thanksgiving redux

We’re back!  Barely!

Snow in WV and VA during the drive home nearly did us in - it was so bad in spots you couldn’t see 15 feet in front of you.  And who was driving?  Floribama boy, Kevin.  But he did a great job and we didn’t die!  So yay for that. More »« Less

turkey truckin’

Wow.  I didn’t expect so much feed back on my last post!  Very strong feelings on both sides out there.  I don’t want to turn my blog into a forum for discussing problems with the US’s health care industry, but it’s obvious from the majority of the commenters that change is needed. More »« Less

Sicko

On monday morning, I had a doctor’s appointment for some bloodwork.  Unfortunately, I currently have no health insurance.  Or rather, I do have some insurance, but it’s temporary, major medical only*, and there’s a $1000 deductible.  No doctor’s visit covered.  So everything had to come out of pocket. Hmmm…that might not be as funny a reference as it usually is, given that the 30th anniversary just happened.

smells like thanksgiving

Tomorrow my office is having a Thanksgiving Luncheon, and everyone is supposed to bring a dish.  I’m bringing what I like to call my “yankee stuffing,” but is really cranberry apple sausage stuffing, made with BREAD CUBES, not this horrible mushy cornbread crap that southerners call “dressing.” More »« Less
