dinner and conversation

Kev and I have talked about the name thing a couple of times, especially recently (with the blog post)

Dinner: grilled cheese sammiches made with extra sharp vermont cheddar, thin sliced granny smith apple, and bacon. And tuscan white bean soup. From…a mix. I can’t be gourmet all the time. Darned good, though!

Conversation:

ESC: you still OK with whatever I choose for my name?

Kev: yesss…of course! Just…two rules.

ESC: yeah?

Kev: my name has to be in there, and we don’t do that hyphenated thing with the kids you wrote about in your comments. We can hyphenate their names, but it has to be consistant.
ESC: Oh yeah, I wouldn’t hyphenate the kids* names.

Kev: OK then. Whatever you decide is fine.

ESC: *grins* love you!

Kev: love YOU!

*KIDS??? No. Kid. One. ONE ONLLLLYYYYYYY!!!!!

  • Bugger, I’m late, due to a crashed computer.

ESC, I married when I was 20 and swapped to my (then) husband’s married name. I always regretted it - not just because we split up much later, but it would have (1) been good for my family to have my maiden name on publications and my degree, etc, and (2) felt that I was successful in my own right.

My kids have their father’s last name, and it hasn’t been more than a tiny problem (yes, I’m Riz A, my kids are Red, Pete and Maddy B).

Hyphenation sucks - I always imagine what’s going to happen a couple of generations down the line, when Esther Polyglot-Humphries marries and has kids with William Boot-Snicker-Flyingant. *grin*
