Mostly for the ladies, but I’d like some male input as well.
Why do I do these interactive posts on friday, just before the weekend when everyone stops reading blogs and commenting? Maybe I’ll leave this up for a while.
OK, I am getting married in 6 WEEKS OH MY GOD!!! One MAJOR decision I […]

ESC: *making a buffer* It’s always bugged me…why isn’t SDS called SLS?
N: what?
ESC: *points at bucket* “sodium lauryl sulfate” - SLS
N: that’s not SDS. SDS is sodium dodecyl sulfate
ESC: what?
N: we should have some…*looks at chemical shelf*
ESC: but…this is what I’ve been using for SDS! *panic setting in* […]
Holy crap! I JUST SENT MY FIRST EVER FIRST DRAFT OF A PAPER TO MY COMMITTEE AND ADVISOR!!!
I feel like I’ve just thrown up part of my soul, then attached it to an email. It’s a feeling of exultation and nausea…all at the same time. I’m not exactly sure what to feel. […]
ESC. 2006 “referenced by many, respected by none” …but mostly rants. 28:951.
Published July 27th, 2006 in science!. 5 CommentsThe thing that is bugging me the most about the writing, is the whole “book report” aspect of it. 90% of the writing is making sure you’ve read and referenced 10,000 other papers on the subject. Soooo many references. I have to look up every damn paper that ever vaguely touched on […]
I am deliriously happy. From Slashfood, I found out that all the clips from the muppet show featuring the Swedish Chef have been compiled in one site.
I weep for joy.
I seem to have a hard time getting the ball rolling for writing. This is how my morning schedule seems to go:
stop at lab, […]
get me out of the lab, please!!
Published July 20th, 2006 in rants, science! and friends. 5 CommentsWith one nice exception, this was just one of those days I really just should have stayed in bed.
It actually started last night on my drive home from the lab. Huh. That’s weird, this road is rarely backed up this much, this late…in the summer. Must be an accident, I shall turn […]
I survived my committee meeting. It was rough. It went both better and worse than I expected.
No one seemed to care about my bonehead mistake. They were satisfied with my plan to fix it. Or they were lulled by my homemade brownies, cheese popcorn, and bottles of coke zero. Always […]
I am again at stress con level 14 lately - committee meeting next week.
This is good and bad and scary all at once. because:
1. I have to own up to being a dumbass about something I’ve been trying to get to work now for probably about a year. And finally realizing the problem…yeah. […]
In the lab, we often want to measure out exact amounts of liquid. For small amounts - less than a ml, we use a pipetter. For larger amounts, we use reusable glass pipets. These we attach to what looks like a little gun connected to a vacuum pump to create suction, which […]
beating my muse to death with a thermocycler
Published July 6th, 2006 in rants, science! and on the teeveeee. 8 CommentsOK, I have a serious lack of interesting things to post about here. Because on a scale of 1 to 10, my stress level has reached about a 16.4. It’s hard to post something entertaining or thoughtful or dirty when I’m one dropped ependorf tube away from stabbing someone in the eye with […]
Everyone is out having 4th of July fun except ME. Until 10 minutes ago, I was the only one in the lab. One other person has just waltzed in at 3:30, I’m sure after have super Independence day fun.
I am stuck here for several more hours.
Because I know everyone is super interested in […]

My week was going so well at work - seriously, I was finally getting somewhere.
Then, last night after I left, the powersupply on my 2nd dimension gel crapped out. Probably after an hour. Leaving my dna in a bright beautiful arc…about […]
Simultaneously disappointed and resolved after my last yogurt experiement, I decided to try again. Last time, if you’ll recall, I tried to recreate Activia yogurt using Alton Brown’s standard homemade yogurt recipe. What I ended up with was tangy yogurt soup. Excellent in smoothies, but not so much for other yogurt applications.
I […]
And no, I don’t mean THAT kind of fun.
So I have been very much enjoying the new yogurt product known as Activia. But hooo boy, is it a little on a pricey side. Also, have you seen the sugar content? Something like 17g per cup. Yeouch.
Something must be done!
I know you […]

Published April 6th, 2006 in science! and conversations. 13 CommentsSo I’ve bitched on here before about messing with radioactivity. I hate it. It’s stressful and time consuming. And until recently, my results were never worth it.
For a long time, I would just throw on an old button down long sleeved shirt of mine, snap on the radiation badge, put on the […]
if you happened to be at a fast food establishment where you were able to fill your own drink at the soda fountain, and while you were filling your large cup with the diet pop of choice, while bemoaning the lack of CHERRY flavored diet pop in fountain form at said establishment, you noticed that […]
Why didn’t I bring a book? Or my knitting? Or SOMETHING to show my absolute disdain for the waste of time that will occur in just a little while.
What is it? Lab safety training. REQUIRED lab safety training. For everyone, regardless of how long you’ve worked in a lab. […]
after a several month hiatus on 2D gels, my advisor demanded I decided of my own free will to pick them back up again and give it another shot.
Savvy old school readers of my blog may remember my past rants about 2D gels, which I am too lazy to go back and find and link […]
It happened again. I was in the bathroom, in one of the two stalls. The other stall was already occupied.
The occupant flushed the toilet, opened up the stall…and then…

OK, I lied
Published January 13th, 2006 in rants, relationship/sex, misc, blogging and science!. 0 CommentsI lied in my comments in the last post. I did have some time to tweak around my template. of course, I SHOULD have used that time to knit. Or clean. But something like that just eats at me. TEMPLATE PROBLEMS! POOR, DEPRIVED READERS WHO CAN’T VIEW MY BLOG […]
Dammit.
Latest results aren’t at all what we thought they might be. Which could be fine, as it means I won’t have any more experiments to do and can just WRITE THIS SHIT UP ALREADY! Christ, this is MY OLD PROJECT! I REALLY didn’t want to have to do any more experiments on […]
Everyone stop what they are doing and read this.

It’s an article about teaching evolution for anyone, no matter WHAT your background. And how to remove the “threat” aspect of it that so many people feel is there.
But this is at the college level. We need to do this for kids. For middle […]

fun with data!
The two isolates that were behaving themselves last week are now acting totally screwy. The isolates that are acting not so screwy, give me the exact opposite results that I got last week.
Nothing I do is ever straightforward. Why the hell did I go into science???

For the love of God, E-Lo and Tash, DO NOT READ THIS!!! THIS IS MY PERSONAL PARANOIA.
In my first year of graduate school, I took a med school class called human genetics. Sounds cool, right?
No.
The majority of this class was spent studying all the horrific things that can go wrong during fetal […]
Just got word that I will finally be published….sort of.
Someone else from another lab actually wrote the paper. BUT they used yeast strains that I created. Strains I had originally created for a project that flopped, but at least they got use out of them. And I got second author on a […]

Brenda used a plastic pipet to drip orange gatorade into some leftover liquid nitrogen
(this is what scientists do on a friday, when they’re starving for entertainment)
it made little dippin-dot like balls of frozen gatorade, which we strained out. I have a picture…on my cell phone…and I don’t have my usb cord for it yet…and I’m […]
liquid nitrogen pics are up!
we didn’t follow any specific recipe. we just mixed one and a half bottles of mocha frappacchino and a carton of heavy cream.
It came out a little ice milky, but still very good! And we didn’t use as much liquid nitrogen as we thought, which was good. Which […]
