It is. Maybe I’ll take a pic later to delight and amaze.
My week was going so well at work - seriously, I was finally getting somewhere.
Then, last night after I left, the powersupply on my 2nd dimension gel crapped out. Probably after an hour. Leaving my dna in a bright beautiful arc…about an inch from the start. So I’ve got it set at 190V in an attempt to complete the run by the end of the day. But now I’ve got nothing to do. I should be writing, or something. But i’m not. I’m wasting time on the internets.
Anyway, go here and figure out where your limit is. I can hear 17,000Hz, but nothing after that. Some of the younger punk undergrads in the lab can hear a faint 19,000Hz, but nothing after that. So maybe it does work!

On a completely unrelated note, does anyone out there know how to “grab” a favicon from a website, so that I can use it as a button link? I found a plugin that’s supposed to do it for me, but I can’t get it to work.
Ok, is this a a prank and now I’m going to be opened up for all kinds of “dog” jokes? I could hear all of them, perfectly clearly. The only difficulty I could detect was the 17,000 recording seemed to be lower in volume, which made it harder to hear.
seriously? all the way up to 22,000? not even the undergrads could hear that one. all of them are supposed to be the same volume. If you’re hearing it softer, it just means you can’t hear it as well as the rest.
Is your normal hair guy feeling jealous?
Apparently, I am deaf. It’s news to me.
Aimee - normal hair guy ended up working on a guy RIGHT NEXT to me. I apologetically told him that I tried to get him, but he wasn’t available, and he was TOTALLY cool about it. Both he and my new girl laughed about it, and how none of the people who work there care who we go to, just as long as we don’t cheat on them with another salon. So it was all good.
Scoot - not deaf. just old
Too bad my last name isn’t still Keller, it would be so appropriate after that test…
yeah, 17k is my limit too. can sort of hear the 18,000 but i’m not sure if it’s because i know it’s making noise or what. but, meh. i’m getting old.
I think there’s something wrong with the sound on my laptop.
I don’t know if I’ve understood your favicon question but grabbing a favicon is just a question of going to its URL: http://whateversite.com/favicon.ico
Eg https://evilsciencechick.com/favicon.ico
The icon will display as a graphic, right click, save image as, et voila.
I haven’t tested my hearing yet… I’m scared I don’t have much left!
I topped out at 19,000. 20 and 21 made my speakers click, but that’s all I could hear from them. I heard nothing at all at 22. I think it’s funny how fast this is spreading around the internet. I read Steve’s post about it at the Sneeze, and I could very clearly hear the high pitch in the first clip (which I believe is also on the site you linked to) even when all the older commenters were saying there was absolutely nothing and couldn’t be anything. Naysayers.
I topped out at 16,000. I could “hear” 17,000-19,000, but it was more like annoying buzz in my ear. That’s surprizing, considering I’m always like “hey, speak up I can’t hear you” at my labmates - ’specially in the hood.
BTW, I totally relate to your gel drama. I tried setting my timer to come back to a gel and transfer it today - and now I am here twiddling my thumbs at 10 PM waiting for it to finish running. Blegh.
My ears crapped out at ~15 khertz. Hmmm….
Sorry to hear about the power loss. It’s not like a 2-d gel is that simple to make again either. Usually electricity leave me stranded by knocking out a thermal cycler. That’s a darned bit easier to redo than a big SDS gel…
Love the new banner BTW.
the good thing is, it wasn’t ruined. I’m doing a 2D DNA gel, and the second dimension is pretty sturdy agarose - a little over 3%. my smallest fragment of interest is 3kb, so I’m pretty sure nothing floated away while it sat overnight. so all I had to do today is whack the power supply until it started working again, and then let it go.
all day.
until around 7:45.
I got home around 9:30, after I stopped at WENDYS to pick up some well deserved greasy dinner!
16,000, but only in my left ear. My right stops at 15,000. Of course, 15,000 is similar what I ALWAYS hear in my right ear. Enough to drive a woman crazy, I tell ya.
Alright, I am in a loud office, so I’ll try this again later. But I can definitely hear 17,000, and think I can hear 18,000-19,000 as well, although those are basically annoying buzzing sounds. Like my Spidey Sense is tingling or something.
I could hear 16, but not 17. I could hear the little click wen it would kick on, but I couldn’t actually hear the noise.
