Sweet Sunday

Woke up early this morning to get to church before the choir all had to be there, so I could warm up on my trombone. Amazingly, I had some extra time to have some breakfast before I left, so I decided to pour myself a bowl of…

ANTS!!!!!

Fuck. Spent my extra time throwing away TWO newly opened boxes of cereal, removing everything off the top of the fridge, cleaning, and then spraying with a good dose of roach and ant spray.

“NEAR FOOD, ESC??? are you trying to KILL someone????”

I weigh my options. Food with ants all in it? Or the bottoms of boxes of cereal and…instant potatoes (shut UP, they’re good) maybe touching some poison residue.

I risk it. I fucking HATE ants. I haven’t died yet!

Anyway…no breakfast for me. I do get to church in time to warm up a bit, though.
God, my chops are so out of shape! The music service went VERY well, though, in spite of a panicked moment when, during the processional, the men waited TWO measures to start their verse instead of one…ACK! SING DAMMIT!

And my trombone part went well, too! It’s interesting to play while people are singing. The choir has a tendencey to drag the beat, which is frustrating sometimes.

Afterwards to the lab for a couple of hours, and THEN, while I had HOPED to get home to make cookies…noooooo…I had to go out and buy more cereal AND buy some of those plastic cereal containers to keep the ants out. I decided to try my luck with Target.

While I found some things to aid in my cookie making (cooling racks - stackable! and a cookie dough scoop - how have I lived without this???), I couldn’t find any of those containers. I walked through the whole store three times, mentally crying “DON’T MAKE ME GO TO HELL-MART!!!”

I had to go to hell mart.

But I found what I needed quickly, and got OUT of there, avoiding screaming kids and herds of women standing in the middle and blocking the aisle, having arguments in another language about…dish soap, apparently.

GET OUT OF MY WAY, PEOPLES!

By the time I got home, I was exhausted. Kev went to church with me to hear me sing (isn’t he sweet?) and then went to a gun show (shut UP!). we got home around the same time, and fell asleep on either end of the couch together, our legs tangled up and keeping each other warm.

awwwww….

Then I woke up and made some cookies! Only one kind today - ricotta cookies.

Busy busy busy busy day.

10am - dress rehearsal for our choir service of music. still putting my trombone skills to good use - I haven’t embarassed myself, at least.

12:15pm - on a tip from a woman at curves, I find a store called Amtrec. It’s a warehouse - you know all those catalogs that little kids get at school to sell christmas stuff and raise money? Well, whatever doesn’t sell goes to this warehouse, and they sell it for dirt cheap. Most of the stuff is crap, but I bought a bunch of really nice wrapping paper (12 rolls!), ribbons, bows, and tissue paper, as well as some wooden christmas trays I can fill up with cookies and give as gifts. all for $25!

1:20pm - Farmer’s Market! My biggest Atlanta weakness! I need ingredients to make this for the lab christmas party on friday. and also found a way to spend ALOT more money on…goodies. Challah bread, large red juicey grapefruits, terra chips, wine, fresh spinach tortellini, SO much other stuff, and a very large fillet of cod.

2:30pm - stop in at publix to buy baking supplies for candy and cookies. I have a BIG list this year - I give it all away to friends as gifts, and then take a big tray home to my family.

3:00pm - liquor store to buy a small bottle of chambord for my truffles, and a bottle of vodka for….me, I guess.

3:30pm - get home, unload groceries, unload and stack dishwasher. there is not enough room for all the dishes…oops! decide to relax for a bit and let the dishes wash, then I can unload them, put in more dishes, and clean up in preparation for chocolate making.

3:45pm - I’ll just relax on the couch a bit, maybe watch some tv.

3:48pm - zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

4:00pm - zzzzzzzzzzzzzz mmfmffff mmm? zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

4:30pm - zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz snk zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

4:45pm - zzzzzzzzzzz…huh?

5:00pm - start heating cream and melting chocolate for chocolate pretzel rods and truffles

chocolate pretzel rods, with chocolate jimmies and coconut. still awaiting a drizzle of white chocolate.
chocolate pretzel rods
future truffles
on the way to being truffles

6:30pm - make dinner! cut up, batter, and fry cod, roast some red potatoes, and make salad.7:15pm - eat my fucking awesome dinner. holy crap, we’re both stuffed. definately putting fried cod on my “hey, I can do this and I’ll do it again!” list.

god I’m tired. even with my nap. Tomorrow I will start on the cookies. My cookie To Do list is:

1. those neiman marcus urban legend chocolate chip cookies
2. oatmeal cookies
3. white chocolate cherry cookies (or bars…I haven’t decided yet)
4. ricotta cheese cookies

I wish I could make pizzelles, but my pizzelle maker is in storage.

tomorrow is church, work, and then COOKIE MAKING!

titillating quickie

I am at the tail end (literally) of my underwear laundry cycle. Kev did a load of my delicates for me last night (isn’t he a sweetie) but they weren’t dry by this morning.

result: I am wearing a purple satin g-string under my jeans.

hope everyone is having THAT good a friday!

checklist

Good lord, I have a wedding checklist already.

wedding dress - check! Aimee is making it for me! HOW AWESOME IS SHE????

maid of honor - check! talked with my best friend Jenni last night until after 1am. even though I don’t have a date yet, she said she would be my MoH. Hooray! It will be tricky, since she’s in PA now, and will most likely be in Boston in a few months (why the hell is everyone moving to Boston??? It’s so cold!)

tentative wedding plans - so I realized last night after I made the announcement to the choir that I was NOT going to be able to keep the wedding very small. My whole church (which admitedly is not all that big a group) will want to be there. I swear, these people are the most wonderful, friendly, supportive group EVER. Also, the santuary at my church is GORGEOUS. Seriously - the stained glass windows are breathtaking. My initial decision to not have the wedding there stemmed from not wanting a small group of people echoing around a large sanctuary. But if I open it up to more people…then I can have more of my friends there…PLUS if I do it at my church…FREE! Membership has its benefits.

Which leads us right back to money…I have no idea what my parents are going to be able to help me out with money-wise. So assuming very little (I could be wrong there, but let’s assume little and work from there), what I’ll do is this: open the wedding up to everyone who can come. Afterwards, have an informal reception/gathering in the church parlor with hors-d’oeuvres, cookies (cookie bar! shout out to the pittsburghers in blogland - you can’t have a wedding without a cookie bar!), etc. Then after THAT, close family and friends go out to dinner. Then a few weeks later, we’ll have a big throw down reception in Pittsburgh, so more of my family would be able to attend (I have a lot of older relatives who wouldn’t be able to make the trip to ATL).

I’m not sure how that all works out etiquette-wise, but I’m not sure how much I care, really. It’s MY PARTY…um…I mean, of course, OUR PARTY and I’ll…we’ll do what we want!

I’m kicking around the idea of starting another blog (another one! for my collection!) for just wedding stuff. The decision there would be - do I make it an extension of this site, or do I do a separate account and not at all link it with this site, so I can let my family and other friends know about it, and leave comments, etc.

TOO MANY DECISIONS! and I’m already getting asked “date? is there a date???”

Gah! I have to graduate first! This points to a date tentatively at late summer, early fall.

How do people do this? How can they keep track of what they have to do, and what decisions need to be made…and then PAY for all of it??? Ack!

rrrrrrrinnnnggggg!!!!

So the ring has been selected and ordered! It will arrive by the 17th.

Yes, Kev described it to me.

No, I’m not sharing those details with you. You will just have to wait for pictures. Why? ’cause I’m mean like that, that’s why.

I am also super emotional. Good lord, the past couple days I will cry at anything. Yesterday morning, I was driving to work and listening to the 24 hours of all christmas music channel (shut up, I’m festive, dammit!) and this song came on that just made be bawl. It was a child singing acapella what sounded like a mexicanish folk melody, about a orphan girl named maria, who found an injured bird and used her last peso to buy a cage for it. It was all she had in the world, so when it came time to offer gifts to the baby jesus in the manger at church, she waited until late at night, after everyone else left lavish gifts of gold and diamonds, and then offered up the injured little bird. And then God (presumably) spoke to her and told her to open the cage, and the bird was healed….and…flew to the top of the church…and…*sob* sang a pretty song…and *sniffle* that was the very first…night…night…*choke* NIGHTING GALE SONG….and…

OH MY GOD, WHY AM I CRYING AGAIN?????

If I hear that damned emotionally manipulative Christmas Shoes song, I’m just going to change the station.

update: Lyrics to the little bird song here.

Speaking of christmas music…

Last week, I decided to download some christmas songs for my cell phone, since the most christmassy ring tone it came with was the Nutcracker . and since I have SO MUCH MONEY TO BURN, I decided I needed some funky christmas ring tones.

I scrolled through the options, I needed to decide if I wanted a real voice, radio -like song, or a ring toney song.

What were the options of the former???

Christina aguilera singing “oh holy night”

Mariah Carey singing “away in the manger”

Ruben Studdard singing “silent night”

Oh holy SHIT, people! Christina Aguilera??? OH HELL NO! I’m pretty sure that it is a sign of the apocalypse. I’m surprised Jesus hasn’t returned to earth to kick some ass JUST BECAUSE Mariah Carey is STILL SINGING ANY SONG. I know I would.

C’mon, people, it’s CHRISTMAS, for God’s sake!!!! If you’re going to have people singing christmas songs, especially religious christmas songs, AT LEAST have them be people you’d like to meet and not worry about getting some disease from! Who haven’t waved their vaginas at you on MTV (uh, Christina? You might want to get that green spot check out…I think you’re rotting) or whored themselves out to Simon whathisface for fame and fortune.

I WANT A SKANKY WHORE FREE CHRISTMAS!

So “just say no” to skanky whores this holiday season.

And what did I end up with for my phone? the ring-toney like songs.

when Kev calls: little drummer boy
when the parents call: I’m dreaming of a white chrismtas (I wanted “i’ll be home for christmas,” but NO ONE had it! can you believe it???)
when anyone else calls: we wish you a merry christmas.
