my 2cents in

everyone is posting about Steve Irwin. I guess I will, too.
Yes, his death is a tragedy. An expected one, true, but still sad. However, a bit anger for the family he left behind…

it is all well and good to be a reckless male in your youth. Running around jumping on wild animals, or doing death-defying stunts on motorcycles, or what have you.

But when you get married, and ESPECIALLY when you breed and produce offspring (hehehe), your priority is now your family. If there is a way for you to earn money that does not involve taunting death every moment of the day, then it is your responsibility to do that instead.

Yes yes, I’m sure the Irwin estate will not collapse. I’m sure there is enough money in the bank for the wife and kid to live a comfortable if not luxurious existance for the rest of their lives.

But she goes to bed alone tonight.
His daughter’s memory of him will slowly fade, until she only remember bits and pieces. A word, a fun moment, a wiped away tear.

And was that worth it? You may say he was a great conservationalist, but so are many people. You don’t see Jane Goodall wrestling with chimps, do you? Steve could have left the croc wrangling to someone else.

Of course, it wasn’t a croc. It was a sting ray. Really? I pet a few of those at the GA aquarium. I didn’t know they could back up and run you through.

I suppose you could say “he died doing what he loved to do,” but is that better? Would you rather die young doing your favorite thing (I don’t know…a freak knitting needle accident?) or die old and frail, in your bed, surrounded by your family, who you’ve had many happy years with? Is there more honor in one than in the other?

Steve Irwin tempted fate every day. Statistically, his untimely death was almost a certainty. It does not make it less sad, but it does make it depressingly senseless.

And for what it’s worth, I had “bitten in the jugular by an angry koala” in the pool.

  • Dude, I still think it’s funny. Even Jack Hanna said that stingrays will normally avoid people, but this dipshit who has spent his whole life cornering wild animals hit the stingray jackpot and pissed one off. I think there’s only so long before your stupidity catches up with you, and it caught up with Steve. Crikey!

  • There was no stupidity. He was not stupid or he would have died years and years ago. It was a freak accident. The stingray could have punctured his arm or his leg but he had the bad luck of getting a hole in his heart.
If breeding meant you need to keep both feet on the ground at all times (after the fact of course) the world would be pretty unpopulated.

And Jack Hanna is a wimp.

  • You’re getting married in 32 DAYS!!!

Just wanted to throw that in there to freak you out a little…

  • thanks for that.

I almost forgot I have a meeting with the florist at 3. I was trying to be all creative and see if I can take the shuttle to Decatur, meet with the florist, maybe get my nails done, and then take the shuttle back to school, and then pick up my normal shuttle to my car…

but that’s alot of back and forth on the same roads. Fuck it. I’m taking the shuttle to my car and driving.

Hmmmm…I wonder if acrylic tips will make it difficult for me to write…?

  • Jack Hanna is a wimp. Ever since I saw Steve Irwin and Manny Puig and even Jeff Corwin actually go into the wild and find these dangerous animals, I knew Jack wasn’t hardcore.

The world wouldn’t be unpopulated, it would just be full of boring people who never did anything but sit on their couch.

Angry koala was a good guess. Those bastards are mean!

    Hehehe, Jane Goodall wrestling chimps.

  • Ah, such a wonderfully debated topic.

I loved the Crocodile Hunter, he had no fear for the dangerous animals he studied. He simply had respect for them. He led an interesting life and brought his wife and kids along for the ride.

Life can end at any moment, you could choke on your terriyaki chicken tonight and never live to see one one hundreth of what that man saw. Look at how many people die in skiing accidents or boating accidents or car accidents every year - atleast he led his life with excitement.

Granted, it is a horrible tragedy for his family, but if there weren’t people out there risking their lives every day despite having a wife and children, we wouldn’t have very many policemen, army officers, firefighters or even miners, crab fishermen or oil riggers!
Soap box, what soap box? LOL

  • I had “Tripping on a rock and impaling head on sharp broken tree branch.”

    Who knew a stingray?

I wasn’t surprised by his death, we all knew it was gonna happen, you can only tempt fate so many times. We’ve all seen a lot of near misses on TV with him! Jumping away from giant jaws! And gone, “DUH!”

But was it a freak accident when he took extreme risks every day? Not so much!

  • I have petted stingrays. Stingrays are nice unless cornered. Steve cornered a stingray, albeit unwittingly. Karma catches up with you. That’s all I’m sayin’.

And I had “Pecked to death by a platypus” in the pool.

  • Not all rays have the venomous spine. He should have swam with manta rays.

Definitely can’t say it’s shocking that he was killed.

  • I believe 220lbs stingrays are a little different. Karma? c’mon. If that were true the creator of American would be dead already. I believe probality catch up to him but karma? I do not know what kind of life he lead.

  • Ha! I totally agree that it suck beyond belief for his family - especially since his wife is/was off climbing a moutain and couldn’t be contacted or something?

I still think it’s kinda funny though. Sting rays are reasonably hard to piss off. And apparently it was all good until the camera man startled it or something? And y’know, it’s a wonderfully ironic way to die.

Really irritates me all these people (as in, people in real life) how sad it makes them… WHY?! You didn’t know him! I don’t know. Reading about animal abuse makes me sad. Some guy whose voice always made me want to shoot myself dying does not make me sad. I did not know him.

But I do admire him for all the work he did for animals, and it DOES make me sad for his family, particularly the littlest one who won’t even remember his father. :(

  • Steve Erwin died doing what he loved after living a short, yet very full life, doing exactly what he loved. Will we be able to say the same?

Love him or hate him… when he got to the Pearly Gates, St. Peter looked at him and said, “You’re the worst stingray hunter I’ve ever heard of…”

And Steve Erwin replies…”Crikey! But you have heard of me, mate…”

  • I’m not saying people shouldn’t do dangerous things ever. I’m saying, if you have the CHOICE to take yourself out of danger, and you have kids, you should. Irwin did what he did out of choice.

On a weird side note, I used to wonder about Steve and Terri’s sex life. I mean, they spend all day chasing wild animals, he jumps on and wrestles said animals…it’s all got to be a major adreniline rush. Coming home and having vanilla missionary style whoopee probably didn’t cut it. I imagine much role playing. And leather and whips.

    just a thought.

  • I am sorry for his family. I am not surprised by his death. Moreover, I saw the footage of the Baby Bob Crocodile incident. Screw what the police said; he endangered the life of his child. I will not mourn him.

  • I’m cracking up that there are already Steve Irwin jokes.

Z~Karma catches up with everyone eventually. I’m not sure where you’re going with “the creator of America” - the Founding Fathers are already dead. If you’re referring to Dubya, he’ll get his eventually. Probably not as soon as some of us would like, but karma doesn’t have to obey clocks or calendars.

  • I had, “Freak accident involving Aboriginal nose-picking implement”

  • ha! that’s what happen when you don’t proof read. Sorry Julie I was talking about “the creator of American Idol” I left the Idol out. No America bashing from this side. At least not on an American blog.

  • Z~Simon Cowell is another one who should be getting a call from karma soon. ;)
