purple haze

When I was a little girl, my favorite color was purple. Other girls liked pink. And barbies. But I was not so much a fan of the Barbie - unless it was to crudely hand sew clothing for her using scraps of fabric my grandmother gave me. I liked purple. And unicorns. And pegasuses. Pegasi? And all things Lisa Frank (I had her bubble gum machine patterned bed set OH YES I DID!) Yeah, I was super cool as a kid. But then I outgrew all that. Right about the time my mom decided to surprise me by painting my room purple and stenciling unicorns, moons, and stars around the windows. Thanks mom! I got too cool (HA!) for purple and unicorns. Instead I was drawn to brown. And…more brown. And black. And dark greens. Pft. Teen angst, expressed in colorways.

But now I feel myself slowly being drawn back to purple in small ways, perhaps signalling an end to the brief pink fling I’ve been in for the past year or so. It started with this.

seasilk

Handmaiden seasilk that I bought for myself as a “Hey, I’m making (crap) money again!” gift. Purchased instead of a pedicure that I still badly need. I can’t stop petting this stuff. I’ve been carrying it around in my knitting bag, just so I can take it out and stroke it. mmm…so soft…and yummy…must resist…urge…to nom…

texture

so smooooooth…

I’ve been pondering what to make with it that will truly showcase its beauty, yet only requires the 440yds of it that I have (gonna have to get a full time gig before I’ll buy two skeins of this crack). I’m thinking I might steal Kirstie’s idea and make a slightly truncated shetland triangle shawl with it. Which means purchasing Wrap Style…hopefully used. (Anyone looking to sell? Trade?)

Purple odyssey continues with the purchase of a new big mug. Astute readers might remember that I purchased a handmade mug last year at a craft fair in pittsburgh. A big comfy mug that held all my french press coffee at once, to really give me the coffee buzz I need in the morning. Well, a while back, my beloved mug got a chip in it.

chipped!

I suspect it was a flaw in the mug. After washing it a few times, I saw the chip forming, until finally a little chunk feel out. If I could remember the name of the guy I bought it from, I’d ask him if there was a way to fix it. I do truly love this mug, and have continued to use it almost every day. But I’m annoyed that I can’t drink out of the one side with the chip. I suppose I can still use it for soup. Or as a pencil holder. *sigh*

This past weekend was Summerfest in the virginia highlands. Knitch closed early and kicked the Sunday knitters out, so I decided to brave the heat and walk on over. With temps in the upper 90’s and high humidity, I armed myself with a bottle of water and made a plan: MUG. I would walk the booths with one purpose: to find mug. I would not linger at every booth, pining over exquisite handmade art that cost a small fortune (seriously, does that marble mosaic tabletop guy ever make any sales there?). I would stick to pottery booths. This plan worked, though by the time I found the booth for me, my top was drenched and sweat dripped from my hair. Oh so sexy. But NEW MUG!

new mug

ALSO PURPLE! The artist’s name for this glaze was “iris,” as it is the state flower of his home state of Tennessee. I briefly flirted with another mug in the glaze colors “pizza,” but there was too much green and not enough red for me. But I LOVED the purple in this mug!

comparison

It is taller and narrower than my old mug - almost beer stein-like. In fact, an older man browsing the booth at the same time suggested that I should use it for just that - an icy cold beer on this hellishly hot day. I’m not a beer drinker, but even THAT sounded good to me.

So I’m back to my purple roots. It will be interesting to see if anything else purple catches my eye in the next couple weeks. Maybe I’m regressing?

If I start sketching unicorns all over my notebooks, though, please someone…make sure I get help? Thanks.

I loves me sum purples! Hey, did you know that there is a beer called purple haze?? I actually had one just yesterday! Yum!

Ooh, nice colour! Steal away - it’s only fair, since I stole the idea from someone on Ravelry.

I don’t own Wrap Style either, but I found it at my local library. And it was such an addictive, fast knit that I didn’t even have to renew. :)

Damn, you were a lucky kid. I would have died for a lisa frank bed spread. Instead, I had to settle for large folders, and pencils, and stickers and stationary. My fifth grade class had a racket going on…

Ooh. I want the purple yarn.

I too, was a purple girl. I had ENTIRE OUTFITS down to socks that were purple. Then I hit my pink faze around 8 years.

As for the mug, do you know anyone that does ceramics? You should be able to clear glaze over the chip (to prevent further damage). As for fixing it, you MIGHT be able to have it filled, but I wouldn’t bet on it. Ask around at knitch… you should be able to find a studio or person who can fix it for you. (If not, send it up here to Ohio, and I’ll do it!)

Uh yeah - I know someone who does ceramics!! :) We could definitely clear glaze it for you. We could also try and fill it. If you want to send it to us Mr. Man can evaluate it.

My whole bedroom was purple when I was a kid. It is an awesome color. Hey, I tagged you for a meme, I don’t know if you want to do it, but it’s really easy. See you this weekend?
