the weekend bus that hit me

Saturday we made yet another pilgrimage to Costco, this time for Kev. The company he works for decided suddenly that they were no longer going to provide free lunches to the phone support guys who worked through lunch. Nice. Some frozen enchiladas from Trader Joe’s got him through last week, but he needed a bit more, as he works weirdo long hours and has to eat twice at work. So we stocked up on plenty of lunchmeat, cheese, bread, yogurt, veggies and whatever else he could stuff into the break room’s fridge and freezer.

Sunday required planning and preparation. The Yarn Harlot was in town again, and this time Grace had decided to…well…grace us with her presence. So cleaned up a bit to make the condo slightly less embarrassing as I waited for her to arrive (hey, did you know we had a coffee table underneath all that junk? amazing!) There was some confusion about the directions I had given, but the nice thing about I285 is that it is a loop - even if you get on way too early, you EVENTUALLY make it to where you’re going.

We missed brunch with the group, but managed to get in line to get into the theater before it got out of control.

And again we freaked out the non-knitters, who were probably left thinking that Ben and Jerrys (which had a shop right where the theater entrance was) had some DAMN GOOD ice cream that day.

The usual suspects were all in attendance:

oh hallooooo

the chicken goddess waves to her subjects

emo grace is emo

emo grace was emo

at the knit inhalloooo ladies!

the crowd was a-knittin’

The raffle was drawn and many fabulous prizes awarded.

meg displays fabulous prizes

blogless Meg displayed the fabulous prizes

olivia possessed by demons

Olivia was rendered POSSESSED BY DEMONS by her prize of…ummm..something blue sky alpaca DPNs .

katey and her prize

Katey won the expensive prize. That there? Is a ball of vicuna. It costs $300. Wrap THAT around your brain!

Sadly your favorite evil scientist did not win any prizes. Such is life for an evil scientist. We must clone our own prizes.

The Yarn Harlot was her usual funny self, in spite of a unnecessary morning panic and then Delta lost her luggage WITH HER YARN OH MY GOD!!! Poor woman. It’s amazing she was able to stand up straight.

frustrated but here!

She managed to make being charming and funny seem so effortless. Really, even though I’d just seen her last September, I’m glad I went again. It’s good to be reminded that you’re not weird for doing what you do. Knitting and hanging out with knitters is no different than going fishing with your buddies, or watching a football game on Sunday. Except when we’re done, we have something beautiful to show for it. She also talked about research people have done that shows that doing repetitive tasks can generate theta waves in your brain - which are meditative and allow for creative thinking. And that repetitive tasks have been shown to help people who have just experienced something traumatic. That study even mentioned knitting as a possible means to help people who have just experienced trauma…except that it would be impractical to carry around “emergency knitting.”

hahaha…right…who does that? *whistles innocently*

ANYWAY…a good time was had by all. After we heard Stephanie talk, our big group trouped next door to Atkin’s Park restaurant for much needed sustenance - especially Grace and me, who had nothing to eat all day but puny dollar burgers from Wendy’s and some ice cream. Which explains why we both ordered the monstrous half pound angus burgers and crammed them down, only to feel shame, grief, and beef overload afterwards. *burp* that was a lot of burger.

Then over to Knitch for the book signing. After she signed my book, I asked if she’d hold my sock for a picture. Which she did…and fondled it thoughtfully as I took the pic.

stephanie inspects my sock...

She complimented the dyeing job I did on the yarn..and then…

...and then starts knitting it

…started to knit. The mean girls at Knitch had taken away her knitting so she could sign autographs, and she was feeling a little shaky. Ha! So half a purl row on the heel of my socks has the Yarn Harlot’s special touch. Thanks!!!

Then it was time to go home. I saw Grace off, put some chicken fingers in the toaster oven for Kev, who missed out on burger goodness…

and then passed out on the couch for 2 hours. It was a long day on not very much sleep…but fun! Can’t wait until next time ;)

ALSO! there is a picture of all of us with an article in the AJC! The link is here, though you might have to log in first. If you use firefox, and use the bugmenot plugin, you can sign in without registering first.

/me is fascinated by how the Yarn Harlot is holding your needles - I know she Cottage knits, but I would not have thought it was possible with the Magic Loop (those are circs, right?)

The YH was a blast - sorry I missed her back in Sept. It was fun meeting you and some other bloggers I read. Hopefully we can all do it again soon; YH does have another book coming out later this year! Knit on crafy girls!

Wish I could have joined you this time! I’ll see her tomorrow though. =) I saw you in the pic this morning when Brittany sent the link! Yay! You’re famous!

Hey, I am only repeating what she said! “they took my knitting away” - I only assume you had ripped it cruely from her fingers, glued the pen to her hand, and chained her to that chair. ;)

Jumped over from Stephanie’s site. *Love* that she got to knit on your sock! You no doubt saved her sanity with your juicy dye-job and some stitches, especially after the airline lost her luggage. Brava! We further down the line thank you for keeping her alive to hang in for the rest of the tour. ;)
