smellypost

the smelt experiment: 2/3 successful.  I breaded them in a mix of bread crumbs, parm cheese, chopped garlic, and parsley.  Kev liked them.  Sadie liked them.  I…um…tolerated them.  And then I fed the last two on my plate to Sadie.  They are too funky tasting for me.  And funky smelling.   I will have to experiment with a DIFFERENT fish next time.

general foot health: last week I got a bug bite on my foot.  That I scratched.  Then I wore sandals with straps that irritated it further, and I scratched some more.  This developed into a rash, so I put my usual eczema cream on, and it only got worse.  And today I was limping around like Gimpy McGimperson - somehow, it got infected, puffed up my foot, and caused PAIN MUCH PAIN TO SHOOT UP MY LEG WITH EVERY PAINFUL STEP!

My guess is flesh eating bacteria.  Or leprosy.  Either way, if it’s not better tomorrow morning I’m going to the doctor. As I type this, I am soaking it in epsom salts and also eating blueberry pie.  I’m pretty sure both will help equally.

summary: I have no pictures to show of either.  I’m sure you are all totally disappointed.

I’d have guesses staph infection, but I like your guesses better, and you still go to the doctor, so we’ll say you have leprosy and need it fixed.

*ouch* on the foot. Sure hope you can get it sorted soon. I had a similar problem a while back and thought it started with an insect bite. Turned out to be an ingrowing hair!

I have heard of smelt before but never seen it in the flesh so to speak. What you did with it sounds lovely.

Oh, dear lord… ingrowing hairs suck worse than a black hole made in Switzerland.

Of the two, I hope it’s flesh eating bacteria because I’m pretty sure you can recover from that.

I’m hoping for not gangrene. According to Wikipedia, smelt has a similar odor to cucumbers and that smelt roe is the bright orange tiny eggs on sushi. I love that stuff. Sounds like I should stay away from the fish though.

I’m making some wild caught Canadian perch tonight. Thanks Canada!

If you have any kind of fever or other bad feeling, GO TO THE DOCTOR NOW. Some of those infections can get really bad really quickly.

    Seriously.

    MRSA, definitely.

Seriously though, go to the doctor. Bacteria are nasty little things lately what with all the antibacterial stuff floating around making them resistant to killing.

And smelts-ugh. Once a year my grandmother made them as part of the traditional italian christmas eve dinner, seven fishes or whatever it was. Gross. Little bastards still had heads.

Don’t even get me started on the bakala and the calimari.

Oh………..I see now - the reader didn’t show the whole thing so I missed half. Yep, I figured it was some sort of “bite gone bad”. Keep going with the Epsom salts too!
