Two of the cold rooms upstairs broke today. SL charged into SJR’s office and announced that we had stuff in those cold rooms and needed to get it out. So SJR, AA, and I (the only ones left here at 3:00) grabbed a cart and proceeded to load up the surprisingly massive amount of crap to bring downstairs to out cold room. It actually took 3 carts to load up all the stuff.
We were expecting old yeast plates - mostly stuff that has long since dried up and gotten moldy. Also old DNA preps that people were hanging on to “just in case” (scientists can be big pack-rats).
SL was assisting us by grabbing stuff off the shelves and handing it to us and making comments like “what is all this crap?” and “how much of this crap do you guys have???” (he fancies himself a comedian) when all of a sudden he yelled “THIS IS DISGUSTING!!! WHAT IS THIS????” and pulled a box from the very top shelf. “I see moldy salsa and guacamole!!! and what is that stuff…croutons???”
I recognized the box, unfortunately, and with my stomach clenched, I responded “those aren’t croutons. those are…cheese cubes.”
Three years ago was the last time a graduate student from our lab defended her thesis. We threw her a reception afterwards in the lobby. This food was left over from that party.
Can I just say…EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!
